Lucas sells starter and alternator businesses

LucasVarity, the engineering group, has it sold its heavy-duty starter and alternator manufacturing business, based in the UK, and its light- duty starter and alternator businesses in South Africa and Argentina to Prestolite Electric Inc for an initial pounds 25.4m. Up to pounds 11.4m will be payable on a contingent basis. Under the terms of the sale, PEI will acquire the assets of Lucas Heavy Duty Products, the share capital of Lucas South Africa and shares in Lucas Indiel, Argentina. In the year to January, sales of the three businesses totalled pounds 80m and their pre-tax profit was pounds 3m.
