MECONIC, the chemicals group with a legal monopoly on UK opiate production, fell into the red following a clampdown in Germany on prescriptions of methadone, the heroin substitute. The German government found doctors were prescribing the drug as a pain-killer. Meconic posted annual pre-tax losses of pounds 2.5m, down from a pounds 6.8m profit.
