MEPC, Britain's second-largest property company, said it had looked at the MetroCentre, but decided against bidding for the north-eastern shopping centre currently being auctioned by the Church Commissioners. A range of large property companies and institutions is vying to buy the centre, the value of which is expected to benefit from a government clampdown on any more large out-of-town shopping malls.
