The narrow measure of money supply, M0, fell by 0.1 per cent last month, but the unexpected decline was due to a fall in banks' deposits at the Bank of England. The more significant component, cash in circulation, jumped by 0.9 per cent in May. Analysts said the figures hinted that gloom about retail sales had been overdone.
