Volker Beckers, group chief executive officer (CEO) at energy provider RWE npower since 2010, is to step down from his role at the end of the year.

He will be replaced by chief commercial officer Paul Massara.

The company said the change was as a result of "group reorganisation" which will see a new, pan-European energy company launched to be known as RWE Generation SE.

Rolf Martin Schmitz, chief operating officer at parent company RWE, said: "The role of CEO of RWE npower will significantly change and the overall scope of the position will reduce."
