Argos has launched its Black Friday sales a week ahead of the day itself, despite issuing a profit warning in October linked to the unpredicability of Black Friday sales.

The Argos website got 13.5 million hits last year, smashing previous records, but the chief executive of Home Retail, which owns the brand, said that the recent rise of the late November sales event, which only arrived in the UK in earnest last year, made it even more difficult to predict sales for the rest of the year.

“We are certainly competing hard and have plans based on how we think Black Friday will unfold but it is very hard to estimate. Retailers who believe the pattern is certain are guessing,” John Walden said.

Argos has taken on 700 more vans than last year and more than 3,000 additional drivers in order to back a new same-day delivery service. Walden said that it was the right thing to do “for the long term health of the business".

Argos's Black Friday sales have started with three for two deals on all toys for three days starting Friday 20.

Argos launched discounts across 2000 products including toys, technology, TVs, video games, health and beauty and more. Offers included up to £300 off TVs, half price home entertainment, 60 per cent off toys, jewellery and kitchen electricals and 70 per cent off selected headphones.
