An American subscription service which allows gig-goers to "binge" on concerts launches in London is aiming to prise punters off the sofa to discover unknown artists.

Jukely, which has been dubbed the 'Netflix of live music', allows music fans to attend an unlimited number of gigs a month for a flat fee.

Founder Bora Celik told the Standard: "Nobody needs to discover Rhianna, everybody knows when she’s in town. When they’ve paid up front – like a gym membership – people are willing to be spontaneous and take a risk on discovering something new. Our biggest competition is getting people off the sofa from watching Game of Thrones.

"We’re not parasites feeding off hot shows, we want to encourage London’s hipsters, designers and artists to find new music."

Users can scroll through its app to see which concerts are available up to two days before the gig. "We don’t want to cannibalise existing sales, just bring in more fans at the last minute," said Celik, who works with promoters, venues and record labels to snare the acts.

More than 50 concerts will be available to subscribers, who pay £25 a month, over the next week at venues across the capital including Shoreditch’s trendy XOYO. The app also shows users which of their friends, and their friends’ friends, may attend a show. "We’re like a matchmaking Jewish mother," Celik said.

Alongside the embryonic acts it aims to promote, big name artists including Interpol, Erasure and James Blake have used Jukely. It has a bias towards indie and electronic music but is rapidly opening up to work with more rock, metal, jazz and hip-hop acts.

Celik launched the service in New York in 2013 and has quickly expanded to 12 cities in the US and Canada. It plans to launch across the UK and in Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin later this year.

The average Jukely user attends between 24 and 36 gigs annually, compared to the typical one or two most UK consumers head to, Celik said.

It offers two tiers of subscription – the basic offer allows one gig pass a day while the £45 premium deal allows users to bring a friend or attend two gigs in a night.

Jukely, which has received investment from the backers of music tech firms Spotify and Soundcloud, will become the latest addition to Silicon Roundabout, joining a host of start-ups in Shoreditch. London’s tech sector is worth $27 billion, the largest in Europe according to London & Partners.
