The publishing group Emap has poached BSkyB's Duncan Painter to take over as chief executive, replacing David Gilbertson who surprised the market when he quit in May.

Mr Painter is currently managing director of Sky IQ, which specialises in customer intelligence services. Its customers include Sky, Centrica and Zurich Financial Services. Emap, which publishes Retail Week and Screen International, did not disclose his start date.

Irina Hemmers, the chairman of Emap and a partner at joint shareholder Apax Partners, said he was "the stand-out candidate for the role" pointing to his "extensive experience of leading successful business-to-business and data companies". Before Sky, Mr Painter held senior roles at Experian Marketing Services, consumer intelligence company Clarity Blue and Hitachi Data Systems.

He replaces Mr Gilbertson who stepped down after three years at the helm.
