People and Business: Goldman's Democrats

JOHN CORZINE, who is due to leave Goldman Sachs following the first, aborted attempt to float the investment bank last autumn, is running for the US Senate. Mr Corzine will stand as a Democrat in New Jersey.

Goldman has something of a tradition of supplying Democrat politicians. Robert Rubin, the Treasury Secretary in the current administration, is an ex-Goldman co-chairman. John Thornton, recently elevated to co-chief operating officer, has volunteered for the campaign committee for Democrat presidential no-hoper Bill Bradley.

John Thain, the other chief operating officer at Goldman, bravely admits to being a Republican, but insists this will not impair his working relationship with the "other John".
