SmithKline Beecham, the pharmaceuticals giant, has paid $120m (about £75m) for the former Sterling Winthrop pharmaceutical research and development complex near Philadelphia. Sterling Winthrop had planned the site as its central research and development operation until it was acquired by the French Sanofi group. SmithKline will move 500 research staff to the plant to fulfil its US development needs.
