r James Millar, the recently-installed chairman of WEW, yesterday bought 150,000 shares in the company a day after it released a poor Christmas trading statement. The price rose 0.5p to 17p. Mr Millar has become something of a takeover indicator in recent years. He was formerly chairman of Wm Low, taken over by Tesco, and at Invergordon Distillers, acquired by Whyte & Mackay almost four years ago.

r Manchester United scored off the pitch, netting a total pounds 6m from a publishing deal with Video Collection International. The deal gives United, up 2p to 191p, pounds 2.5m cash up-front and pounds 3.5m of royalty payments over the next 30 months. In the next 10 years VCI will publish all new videos, books, magazines and other formats under the Manchester United name.
