United drops bid plan for USAir

United Airlines said last night it would not seek to acquire USAir,

America's fifth-largest airline, ending the chance of a bidding war for leadership in the domestic industry. VAL Corp, which owns United, said the decision not to proceed with a bid came after a six-week study of USAir.
