US RETAIL sales rose less than expected in August, as gains in clothing and furniture were restrained by a drop in auto business. August sales rose 0.2 per cent after declining 0.6 per cent in July. When autos are excluded, August retail sales rose 0.3 per cent after rising 0.6 per cent in July.
