Cantona's shirt fetches pounds 15,000

The last Manchester United shirt to be worn by Eric Cantona fetched more than pounds 15,000 last night in an on-the-air radio auction.

Manchester's Key 103 station sold the autographed red No 7 shirt for the testimonial fund for the Coventry City defender David Buust, who was forced out of the game through injury suffered in a game at Old Trafford.

A mystery family from Greater Manchester paid pounds 15,350 for the top which was worn by Cantona in a testimonial game against Coventry. The Frenchman donated it to Buust only 24 hours before his own shock retirement announcement.

The station took thousands of bids during an 11-hour auction. One of nearly pounds 6,000 came from the GMTV presenter and Manchester United fan Eamonn Holmes. Another was made by a group of 164 Liverpool supporters, who bid pounds 3,700 saying they wanted to burn it ceremonially on the Kop.
