GERMANY'S CHRISTIAN Democrats (CDU), regrouping after their worst electoral debacle in half a century, yesterday nominated their parliamentary leader Wolfgang Schauble, 56, to head the party. The outgoing Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, party chairman since 1973, said Mr Schauble had been unanimously nominated to succeed him.
