More than 1,000 people had to stay away from their homes last night following the derailment of a freight wagon containing 60 tonnes of flammable chemicals.

Homes within 300 metres of the derailment near Barry Docks, south Wales, were evacuated because of the risk of a spill of potentially dangerous vinyl chloride monomer, used in the production of PVC. Hundreds of people were given beds at Barry Leisure Centre while firemen supervised an operation to pump out the contents of the wagon.
