Councillors in Liverpool postponed their crisis budget meeting until the last possible moment as they sought a way to bridge a pounds 44m shortfall without cutting more than 800 jobs.

Trade unions are threatening industrial action if the council imposes compulsory redundancies, and several hundred angry council workers lobbied the town hall. The councillors agreed to adjourn until 10.30am on Sunday, with a midnight deadline by which they have to set their budget for 1996- 97.
