CJD victims total rises to 29

TWO PEOPLE died in August from the fatal brain illness caused by eating food infected with "mad cow disease", according to the Department of Health. Monthly figures published yesterday reveal that so far this year six people have died from "new variant" Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, bringing the total since 1995 to 29. The disease is caused by eating food infected with BSE, but scientists say its long incubation period and the impossibility of detecting infection means it is still too early to say how many people will eventually succumb.
