The Roman Catholic archbishop of Gdansk suspended a prominent priest who said Jews should have no place in Poland's government. Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski said Henryk Jankowski would be allowed to resume his job as a parish priest if he showed he had learned a lesson during the year-long suspension.

Fr Jankowski effectively served as a chaplain to Solidarity after it arose in Gdansk's shipyard in 1980 as the Soviet bloc's first free trade union. Reuters - Gdansk
