AVALANCHE warnings were issued yesterday for the Swiss Alps following heavy snowfall across the country, including 16in (40cm) on the mountains. Snow and freezing temperatures caused travel chaos and about 700 air passengers were stranded at Zurich airport.

The heavy snowfall came earlier than expected, contributing to numerous road accidents on low-lying roads not yet gritted for the winter.
