THOUSANDS fled their homes as Typhoon Babs hit a coconut-growing region in the central Philippines late yesterday afternoon, triggering floods and landslides.
There were no immediate reports of casualties. The typhoon pummelled the Bicol region with winds gusting to 147mph as it moved west-northwest at 11mph, stranding thousands of motorists and passengers, weather forecasters and relief officials said.
