A Royal Commission into the long term care of the elderly will be announced tomorrow by Frank Dobson, the Health Secretary.
The inquiry - only the second Royal Commission to be set up in 20 years - will attempt to come up with lasting solutions to the problem of the rising cost of caring for elderly people, who are required to sell their homes to qualify for state aid.
The last government was forced to act after it led to protests from Tory supporters about relatives who felt they were being penalised for owning their own homes while elderly people who had never saved were given state support.
