Global coronavirus cases surpass 4 million
US has largest number of infections and death toll
The number of coronavirus cases worldwide has now topped four million.
And the international death toll stands at around 276,800.
Cases of the virus have been recorded in 219 countries and territories.
The US has seen the largest number of infections and deaths, with around 1.3 million people testing positive, and a death toll of about 80,000.
More than 219,800 people are known to have recovered from the virus across the country.
In the UK, around 31,600 people have died after testing positive for Covid-19 – the second-highest number across the globe.
Other countries in Europe have been badly hit by Covid-19, including Spain, Italy and France. All three were among those that went into lockdown.
New coronavirus infections are accelerating again in Germany – where more than 168,000 people have tested positive as of Sunday – just days after social restrictions were relaxed, raising concerns the pandemic could yet again slip out of control.
The first cases of the virus were recorded in Wuhan, a central Chinese city, towards the end of last year.
