Three former Croatian soldiers yesterday accused top Croatian officials of "systematically covering up" the 1991 slaughter of Serbs and Croats in central Croatia.

They also accused the international war crimes tribunal of being "slow or unwilling" to prosecute the perpetrators.

"Croatia has been systematically covering up the crimes for seven years, and now it seems that The Hague tribunal is slipping away from it," Mirko Levar, a former military intelligence officer in the Gospic area, said yesterday.
