Customs officers and police yesterday smashed what they believe to be Britain's biggest ever excise duty fraud, seizing spirits and beer worth up to pounds 200m.
About 250 Customs officers raided 38 premises including cash and carry outlets, bonded warehouses and private addresses across London. More than a dozen people were arrested.
Officials believe the drink, which was marked for tax-free export only, was in fact destined to be sold on the domestic market without taxes having been paid.
