Nina Cassian was born in Galati, Romania in 1924. She began her literary career in 1947, with the publication of her first poetry collection La Scara 1/1. Since then, she has published over 50 books. Her collections have included Life Sentence (Anvil, 1990), and Cheerleader For a Funeral (Forest Books, 1993). This poem appears in Call Yourself Alive?: Love Poems, translated from the Romanian by Andrea Deletant and Brenda Walker and introduced by Fleur Adcock, published by Forest Books (20 Forest View, Chingford, London E4 7AY), price £6.95.
