Robert Saxton was born in Nottingham in 1952, and read English at Magdalen College, Oxford. He lives in North London and works in publishing. The title poem of this, his first collection, won first prize in the TLS/Cheltenham Festival of Literature Competition in 1988, and subsequently his poems have appeared in Faber's Poetry Introduction 7, the TLS, PN Review, and the Observer. In 1990, he was featured in Poetry Review's New British Poets issue. This poem is from his first collection The Promise Clinic published by Enitharmon Press at £5.95.
