Every English university is to charge students more than £6,000 a year.
The Office for Fair Access revealed that all, except one, of the 123 higher-education institutions in England were seeking permission to charge higher fees. Of those that have declared their fees structure, two-thirds are charging £9,000 for every course – although there are generous bursaries to help students from poorer homes. The 123rd has sought permission to extend the deadline on the grounds that it needs more time to make a submission because it has more part-time students.
The figures put the final nail in the coffin of ministerial hopes that universities charging more than £6,000 a year would be "the exception".
