The FA Cup tie between Aston Villa and Coventry City today recalls their meeting 52 years ago in one of the competition's most memorable seasons. With League football not resuming for another year, the 1945- 46 FA Cup drew huge crowds as life got back to normal after the war.

Every round from the first to the quarter-finals was played over two legs. In the third round Coventry (then of the Second Division) won the first leg against Villa 2-1, but three days later their First Division opponents went through by winning 2-0 at Villa Park.

Villa went out in the sixth round to the eventual winners, Derby County, who beat Charlton 4-1 in extra time in the final.
