An interesting experiment at Tottenham's White Hart Lane school to teach Turkish-speaking pupils science in their home language is to be scrapped after it failed to improve their GCSE exam results. The school's new head, Joan McVittie, is probably right to want to draw a line under the scheme in view of the outcome. She also has a point in that it could be seen as discriminating against pupils with other home languages. However, it should be remembered that if schools fail to try new things to raise standards they can run the risk of stagnating.
