Paul Smith, the former Warwickshire all-rounder who is banned from first- class cricket until 1 April 1999 for failing a drugs test, has joined the Birmingham club, Moseley Ashfield.

David Ripley, the Northamptonshire wicketkeeper, received pounds 129,000 from his benefit last year. The 31-year-old Yorkshireman, who made his Northamptonshire debut in 1984, was named the county's player of the year for 1997.
