The news that undergraduates are being given training in social skills - how to behave in job interviews, how to "meet and greet" people, what clothes to wear and so on - should be welcomed. It may seem laughable that 21-year-olds need such help, but if they are signing up for these courses, they clearly think they could do with some assistance. Universities do not regard it as their job to turn out poised and charming graduates, because their business is the life of the mind. Manchester University should be congratulated for inviting Rachel Holland in to do that job.
