The entrepreneurship being shown by universities such as Essex, Nottingham Trent, Brunel and Hertfordshire to find more international students and bring them up to the level required for a British degree shows just how far we have come from the old days, when higher education was a domestic, non-profit business.

The Government, however, needs to be sure that overseas students are protected and know what to expect when they arrive at a British university. Ministers need to sort out the confusion surrounding whether or not they can work part-time, and the banks should make it easier for them to open accounts.
