It is a credit to London Metropolitan University that it had the foresight and courage, seven years ago, to invest in a new science centre at a time when other universities were wobbling about running some science subjects at all.
Wooden benches and rusty Bunsen burners have been replaced by what is being hailed as the largest and most up-to-date laboratory in Europe. The move is good news for science students, and should also be good for the university's low research standing in the subject. Let us hope that the science centre produces benefits for the local community, too.
