Leading Article: Sporting chance

The university sport league table we publish on page 6 is the first time The Independent – or any newspaper – has published such a table. However, The Good University Guide, now renamed The Complete University Guide, has had a sports table on its website for several years.

This year, the table has been expanded and we have re-ordered it according to the British Universities Sports Association rankings to give readers an indication of how universities stack up in competitive sport. We are pleased to find that most universities are now investing more heavily in sports facilities in the interests of their students.
