Leading article: Happy now?

The government review that this week found most British children to be happy contradicts a recent report from Unicef, which put the UK at the bottom of an international league table examining the wellbeing of youngsters in the world's wealthiest nations. The contradiction calls into question the validity of such navel-gazing. The reports reveal, at most, that children today have different concerns and priorities, and as a result behave differently, from the children of yesterday. The Government should stop dabbling in these introspective, subjective surveys and get on with the business of providing a solid education tailored to the children of today.
