EMPLOYMENT: It's still a man's world at the top

It's still very much a man's world, especially when it comes to top jobs, according to an Equal Opportunities Commission study published yesterday. The commission, in its report Facts About Women and Men 1997, found that, despite making up some 45 per cent of those in paid work, women still only account for 33 per cent of managers and administrators, 6 per cent of police sergeants and 15 per cent of partners in legal firms.

Women working full time earn just 80 per cent of men's average hourly wage - a gap which has narrowed by only 7 per cent in 20 years.
