Chequebook-journalism payments to trial witnesses are to be outlawed, Lord Irvine, said.

In a Lords written reply, the Lord Chancellor said the Government had accepted a select-committee call for payments to witnesses and pre-trial publicity to be controlled by legislation. The committee report also urged strengthening the Contempt of Court Act.
