AN Irish farmer failed yesterday in a libel action in the Irish High Court against the Sunday Times newspaper for calling him a prominent figure in the IRA.

Thomas "Slab" Murphy, 47, from Hackballscross, Co Louth, denied being a member of the terrorist organisation. His action was based on an article that appeared in the newspaper in 1985. The jury also decided that article meant "that Murphy "planned murder and the bombing of property".
