Tension between old rivals Greece and Turkey rose further yesterday amid reports that Turkish fighter planes carrying live ammunition had flown over Cyprus.
The Turkish press reported the armed overflights, in violation of an agreement made with Washington last year, and said they were a retaliation for Greek participation in Greek Cypriot war games on divided Cyprus.
The report came a day after Athens accused Turkey of violating its airspace on Sunday and Monday and harassing a transport plane bringing its defence minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos, to Cyprus on Monday afternoon.
