A strike by Essex firefighters was set to go ahead today after Fire Brigades' Union leaders yesterday rejected a last-minute deal. Union officials held talks with leaders of Essex County Council last Thursday to try to resolve a dispute over pounds 1.5m of spending cuts. But two union negotiators left the meeting early and said discussions had broken down, meaning the first 24-hour strike would start at 10am. The union is planning further walkouts next Monday and Wednesday.
Army Green Goddesses have been placed on stand-by in Essex to act as cover during the industrial action.
