Sara Nathan has been poached from BBC Radio to become the new editor of Channel 4 News, the influential weekday 7pm news and current affairs programme. She is the first woman to edit a national network television news service.

Ms Nathan, 39, pictured right, succeeds Richard Tait, another former BBC news executive, who was recently promoted to editor-in-chief of ITN. Her appointment also confirms that Channel 4 will be renewing its contract with ITN for the programme, from 1996 to the end of 1998, after threatening to consider rivals, including Sky News.
