A local government official crossing a flooded island in the Great Ouse at Oakley, Bedfordshire, on his way to work yesterday after several days of heavy rain. Some villages in the county were under three feet (one metre) of water, but last night a flood alert in Bedford was stepped down. A water level peak on the Nene is expected in Peterborough today.
