The handwritten papers of Mahatma Gandhi, which were to be auctioned in London tomorrow, have been withdrawn from sale at the last minute, apparently after pressure from the Indian government.
The archive had been given to a Hindu charitable foundation and proceeds from the sale, expected to top pounds 1m, were to be spent on the construction of a temple.
Phillips the auctioneers said: "Phillips has been made aware of a claim in respect of the Gandhi papers. The basis of this claim is being investigated by lawyers."
