FIVE THOUSAND people jammed the concourse of Grand Central Station, New York, and applauded yesterday as one of the world's most famous railway stations was rededicated after a 10-year, $200m (pounds 125m) renovation. The station was opened in 1913 and is considered one of America's finest monuments of the pre-First World War style.
The renovation has restored to its original condition the dazzling main hall, with its marble floors and soaring arched windows, the grandiose staircase and glittering chandeliers.
