Classic children's books belonging to the late Caye Webb, editor of the Puffin series, were sold for pounds 32,900 to the newly established Centre for Children's Books in Newcastle upon Tyne yesterday.

The titles included Stig of the Dump, Worzel Gummidge, The Hobbit and Watership Down. The private treaty sale, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Friends of the National Library, and negotiated by Sotheby's, took place three days before the collection of books and memorabilia was due to be auctioned by the firm in London.
