Memorabilia of Sir Winston Churchill are among art treasures, books, furniture and fine wines from the estate of his daughter-in-law, Pamela Harriman,to be auctioned by Sotheby's in New York. The sale, on 19 and 20 May, is expected to raise about pounds 6m, the bulk of which will go to the Tory MP Winston Churchill - Mrs Harriman's only son - and his estranged wife Mary.
Mrs Harriman, the former American ambassador to France who died last month, aged 76, wed Sir Winston's son, Randolph, during the Second World War at the age of 19, but the marriage failed and she went on to marry first the Broadway tycoon, Leland Hayward, and then New York Governor Averell Harriman.
