News that a baby has been born in the UK using DNA from three parents is a testimony to the advancement of science.

The child was born through the use of a pioneering IVF procedure known as mitochondrial donation treatment (MDT).

It is a means of creating IVF embryos that are free from harmful mutations their mothers carry and are likely to pass on to their children. Here, we explain the science.
