Mr Heseltine is not a typical candidate for a heart attack; a non-smoker, he is not overweight, drinks little and leads a fairly active life, writes Liz Hunt. Ansa, the Italian news agency, said he suffered a coronary thrombosis, caused by a narrowing or blockage in one or more of arteries supplying blood to the heart.

Stress and how he deals with it is likely to be a factor.

Mike Rayner, of The Coronary Prevention Group, said recent research pointed to a growing 'lack of control' over events, rather than the pace of life, as a key factor in heart attacks.
