i Editor's Letter: Those in need of a little love

See what happens when you try to spread a little love around?

Even a confirmed cynic, i's very own young curmudgeon, Amol Rajan, takes up the baton (see p14). And, no, I don't have Hallmark shares. I'm even going to give you a free recommendation: if you are on a Valentine's first date, then take them to the multi Bafta-awarded The Artist – you'll be so bored that fast, you will soon have to explore your date's personality. Trust me.

If there's one group of people currently in need of a little love on Valentine's Day (other than poor old Mick McCarthy), then it's tabloid hacks. They won't get any, mind, judging by the response to Simon Kelner's column and the lack of sympathy elicited by The Sun's Trevor Kavanagh's curious and extraordinary paean to his arrested colleagues. More of you, in truth, are in tune with the view expressed by Steve Richards.

It is now feasible to consider the once laughable suggestion that Rupert Murdoch will close The Sun, the paper he built his career and empire on. It would be more seismic than the closure of the News of the World last year – both because, love it or hate it, The Sun remains Britain's biggest-selling paper and because of the power we once all believed it had over politicians and public alike. But, now, this is all about the saga not polluting News Corp in the US.

At the risk of agreeing with Piers Morgan's tweet, there is surely something amiss when we have 30 journalists arrested – some allegedly for buying senior police officers lunch – and yet the radical preacher, Abu Qatada, walks free.

It appears there is more love at Man City for the prodigal Carlos Tevez even, than there is for our tabloid hacks this Valentine's Day!
